Geoffrey Birch

Geoffrey Birch is one of the senior members of Chambers and has many years experience both prosecuting and defending in all areas of Criminal Law. In recent years he has undertaken Leading Junior work and conducted a number of trials in that capacity in the areas of child abuse, sexual offences and offences against the person.
He also appeared as Junior Counsel during 2006 in one of the largest and most complex cases involving sexual child abuse that has ever been tried at the Luton Crown Court.
He has regularly and successfully appeared in the Court of Appeal as both Appellant and Respondent counsel and has appeared in the House of Lords in a case involving the law in relation to confiscation proceedings ( R v Alan Pope).
He has also appeared in many Courts-Martial cases both in the UK and abroad and was in 2006 briefed to represent a British soldier (successfully) in one of the much-publicised Iraqi War Crimes trials.
He has also successfully represented the notorious Charles Bronson in the Court of Appeal.
Most recently Mr Birch has been representing Jennifer Smith-Dennis at a murder trial in Luton Crown Court, known in the press as 'The headless body in the blue lagoon' case. Please follow the link for further details:
