The Chambers of John Coffey QC


  • Karen Dempsey predominantly defends but has also prosecuted. She has been involved in a diversity of trials relating to murder cases, serious violence, drugs, firearms, money laundering, confiscation and sexual offences.

    Specialist areas:

    Karen has a particular expertise in cases involving road traffic offences and has defended numerous cases of death by dangerous driving, careless driving whilst over the prescribed limit, dangerous driving in the Crown Court and complex cases resulting in death, serious personal injury or of a technical nature in the Magistrates’ Court.

    Karen Dempsey is accredited by the Bar Council to provide Public Access services

    Defence junior. 9 handed conspiracy re counterfeit currency (the “super dollar”)and connected drug conspiracy.

    R v Dhaliwal & others (2006)
    Sole advocate. 2 handed money laundering
    involving £1.5 million.

    R v Asghar (2006)
    Sole advocate. Sexual assaults of four juveniles.

    R v Rose & others (2005)
    Sole advocate. 3 handed case involving possession of firearms and drugs with intent to endanger life. The defendants were facing life sentences (5 weeks).

    Sole advocate. 13 handed robbery.

    R v White (2005)
    Sole advocate. Death by dangerous driving.

    R v Freeman & others (2004)
    Defence junior. 13 handed conspiracy to steal £1 million from Gatwick airport.

    Karen enjoys cycling and swimming and has participated in charity bike rides and 5000 metre swimathons. She enjoys the gym, camping, mountain and hill walking, skiing, ice climbing and scuba diving. She also travels when time permits and likes visiting historical buildings and art galleries.
