The Chambers of John Coffey QC


  • In a previous life, before being called to the Bar, Tanya was a Whitehall spin doctor working in Environment.

    She had short spell in Downing Street and more recently completed a year at the Serious Fraud Office as Press Officer.

    Currently Tanya undertakes mostly defence work involving sex cases, children and public disorder.

    She was an independent member of the Parole Board from 2003-2010. She has recently been appointed an Independent member of the Barnet Standards Committee - which regulates the conduct of local politicians. She was the Legal Advisor to the Independent Custody Visitors Association (ICVA) from 1994-2008, having been a founder member of the organisation in 1988.

    In December 2011 Tanya was appointed by the Minister of Justice to The Board of Visitors at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.

    Tanya Ossack is accredited by the Bar Council to provide Public Access services.

    R v H - rape (Central Criminal Court) - Instructed to represent the defendant. Aquitted after a 5 day trial - Dec 2011

    R v P - rape (Woolwich Crown Court) - Instructed to defend - Crown offer no evidence - Nov 2011

    R v A & others - GBH with intent (Inner London Crown Court) - Instructed to defend - defendant aquitted following Tanya's subbmission of no case after a three week trial - Nov 2011

    R v M - rape - (Croydon Crown Court) - Instructed to represent the defendant. Acquitted after a 7 day trial. - Oct 2011

    R v H - rape - (Canterbury Crown Court) - Instructed to represent the defendant. Acquitted after a 5 day trial - July 2011

    R v G-M - rape - (Woolwich Crown Court) - Instructed to represent the defendant. Acquitted after 5 day trial - April 2011

    R v A-D & others - robbery (Croydon Crown Court) - Instructed to represent one of the main defendants. Acquitted after a 5 day trial - Jan 2011

    Notable Cases:

    R v Dumbliauskas and Others - conspiracy to supply firearms with intention to enable others to endanger life - supply of Baikal guns.

    R v Pacan, Arslan and Others -EWCA Crim 2436 - people trafficking for prostitution from Albania.

    R v Perry Cooper. Led Junior - 14 year old charged with manslaughter of his step-father.

    R v Marlow - Rape and serious sexual assault of 3 young family members.

    R v Gurung and Others -  Led junior - joint enterprise murder

    R v White and Others - Leading junior - Conspiracy to rape

    R v Savell - Historic sexual abuse (32 years old)

    R v Chandi - Stranger rape

    R v Anobah - Shaken baby, injured but not fatally

    R v Simmons - 42 year old sexual abuse case - stayed as an abuse

    R v Collins - first case involving the recognition of restorative justice in the sentencing process.
