Sibby Salter

Sibby Salter specialises in criminal law, prosecuting and defending.

She has experience across a wide spectrum of serious criminal cases including murder, other violent crimes, sexual offences, high-value acquisitive offending, and drug offences, as well as related profits of crime proceedings.

Sibby has particular expertise in cases involving serious violence and complex sentencing exercises. She is instructed in multi-handed cases and is a Level 3 prosecutor on the Advocate Panel List.

She is committed to ensuring that defendants and witnesses understand the trial process and are supported, enabling them to give their best evidence in court. She appears in cases involving offenders who have mental or developmental disorders, including cases of insanity, fitness to plead and mental state defences, as well as mental health disposals.

She has been involved in legal education throughout her career. In her early years at the Bar, she combined part-time lecturing and tutoring undergraduates with her professional practice. She currently teaches Criminal Litigation and advocacy to postgraduates on the Bar vocational training course.

She is an experienced advocacy trainer and provides training for students, pupils and practitioners for Middle Temple as well as internationally. She is a Bencher of Middle Temple.

Expertise

She has been instructed to prosecute and defend in homicide offences.

As led junior, she dealt with a complex case of diminished responsibility which, alongside the extensive conflicting expert evidence, presented the unusual feature of the defendant giving evidence.

R v Victor Maibvisira and others

Led junior prosecuting five defendants for the murder of a Kyle Yule in Kent. The defendants were all convicted of murder and sentenced to a total of 88 years for the fatal stabbing.


R v Anis Anderson and Carla Callum.

Led junior prosecuting prosecting two defendants for the murder of a drug-dealer in St Albans.

She has prosecuted and defended across a diverse range of violent offending, including led junior representing a defendant accused of causing significant brain injuries to a child (“baby shaking”). This required consideration of multiple experts’ reports and meticulous preparation of issues of law and fact. The defendant was acquitted.
