Ruth specialises in general crime and has extensive experience acting for both the prosecution and defence in the criminal courts. She advises and represents clients from first hearings through to appeals, with experience in complex and high-value cases, including fraud, sexual offences, GBH, drug supply and possession of offensive weapons, including firearms.
Known for her friendly, direct and measured approach, Ruth combines discerning insight with fearless advocacy. She is particularly committed to supporting young and vulnerable clients through the criminal justice system, drawing on her experience as a mentor, trainer and EDI Champion, together with her wider training and professional insight, to ensure that appropriate applications, expert evidence and support are identified at an early stage.
Ruth is praised for her attention to detail and methodical approach to case preparation and presentation. She has extensive experience assessing and evaluating complex material and providing high-quality written advice and oral advocacy, including legal research and arguments on novel and developing issues.
Her advocacy experience includes applications and submissions concerning discontinuance, half-time submissions, non-defendant and defendant bad character, hearsay, basis of plea, case management and applications under s.78 PACE to exclude evidence. She regularly liaises with prosecution agencies, defence teams, experts and other professionals to facilitate effective case management and hearings, and is equally comfortable acting as sole junior, led junior or in cases involving litigants in person.
Ruth accepts both publicly and privately funded instructions and has experience in quasi-civil proceedings arising from criminal matters, including Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) and gang injunctions. She works collaboratively with all parties while maintaining a robust and client-focused approach, with the aim of achieving fair and effective outcomes in every case.
Ruth also enjoys regulatory work, acting as a case presenter and disclosure counsel for various inquiries and regulators. Previous work includes acting as disclosure counsel for the SFO and on the Dame Linda Dobbs review.
Ruth has been described as a composed yet fearless and approachable advocate.
Ruth has a wide general criminal practice dealing with indictments of numerous counts and all associated legal arguments and procedures. These include theft and dishonesty matters, sexual or violent offences, and those involving the supply/importation of drugs and the possession and/or use of weapons.
R v JS — Represented a defendant charged with s.18 GBH (with s.20 in the alternative) and criminal damage. Following a five-day trial at Luton Crown Court, the jury unanimously acquitted the defendant of all counts. The case involved bad character evidence, defence witnesses and detailed analysis of CCTV, including successfully challenging the accuracy of parts of the footage.
R v SB — Represented a defendant charged with rape and four further offences following a two-week trial at Leeds Crown Court. The original six-count indictment was reduced to five following submissions that one count was not made out on the prosecution evidence. The defendant was subsequently acquitted of all remaining counts. The case involved late disclosure of extensive telephone evidence, which was analysed and effectively deployed to highlight inconsistencies in the complainant’s account.
R v LJ — Represented a defendant charged with six offences, including two counts of non-fatal strangulation, ABH, assault by beating, taking a vehicle without consent and controlling and coercive behaviour. The defendant was unanimously acquitted of all counts following trial.
R v DF — Represented a defendant facing allegations of ABH and seven years of controlling and coercive behaviour. Following a seven-day trial involving multiple legal arguments, the jury unanimously acquitted the defendant of both counts.
R v SM — Co-defended in an eight-day affray trial at St Albans Crown Court involving allegations that the defendants had participated in a street fight involving weapons. Following submissions concerning whether the location constituted a “private place”, the prosecution offered no evidence on the offensive weapon counts. The defendants were subsequently unanimously acquitted of affray.
R v PW — Defended on a three-count indictment. Successfully argued for the exclusion of extensive bad character evidence and removed one count following a half-time submission. Used detailed body-worn video analysis during the cross-examination of police witnesses. The defendant was acquitted of one of the two remaining counts.
R v AHP — Represented the defendant from first appearance through to the proposed Crown Court trial. Made sustained representations concerning serious disclosure failures, ultimately resulting in the prosecution being discontinued shortly before trial.
R v WD — Defended an elderly defendant charged with possession of a knife in a public place, with the assistance of an intermediary. The case involved a complex legal argument concerning what constituted a public space.
R v NG — Prosecuted a defendant charged with s.18 wounding with intent, witness intimidation and making threats to kill. Effectively deployed media and video evidence during cross-examination. The defendant was convicted of the s.18 offence.
R v JC & TO — Prosecuted a substantial conspiracy to commit dwelling burglaries. Liaised with defence counsel to facilitate acceptable pleas from both defendants and subsequently led a complex sentencing exercise involving the burglary or attempted burglary of 20 properties. This required the collation and presentation of extensive evidence, including Victim Personal Statements, images and media, to establish the full extent of the offending and appropriate sentencing ranges. Serious Crime Prevention Orders were also imposed.
R v NB — Prosecuted a defendant charged with burglary, malicious communications, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon in a domestic context. Successfully opposed an application to discharge the jury and obtained permission to adduce the defendant’s bad character to correct a false impression. The defendant refused to attend court after cross-examination had commenced and was ultimately convicted of all counts in his absence.
R v BS — Prosecuted a defendant charged with burglary, harassment, threats involving a bladed article and two assaults against his former partner and her grandmother. Where the defendant had previously pleaded guilty to certain matters, these were effectively incorporated into the agreed facts and deployed during cross-examination to advance the Crown’s case.
Ruth regularly defends youths charged with various matters ranging from minor offences to very serious offences within the Youth or Crown Court. She is able to effectively assist and meet the needs of the youth client, their parent/guardian, and any other associated organisation.
R v SF
Defended in a three-day youth attempted robbery trial prosecuted on a joint enterprise basis. The case involved complex issues including forensic evidence, alongside a successful s.78 application to exclude unfair evidence.
R v NA
Instructed to act for a youth accused of sexual offences against another youth including harassment, sexual touching and assault by penetration. Upon review, the case was discontinued by the Prosecution.
R v FS
Instructed to act for a youth jointly charged with GBH. Worked closely with instructing counsel to secure the appropriate support and measures required for the defendant at court. Following firm representations made by the defence, the case was discontinued against all defendants.
R v JQ & Others — Led defence junior in a complex cheating the revenue and money laundering trial involving Gift Aid claims exceeding £1 million. Cross-examined civilian and professional witnesses and assisted with extensive case preparation, including the analysis and challenge of complex and expert evidence.
R v DC — Led prosecution junior in a large-scale romance fraud involving ten complainants, 19 counts of fraud and one count of theft, with a total value exceeding £100,000. Instructed only two working days before the trial. Managed significant disclosure issues arising from reports initially made to different police forces before being consolidated by the Metropolitan Police. Liaised closely with officers, leading counsel, the reviewing lawyer and defence, including securing additional investigative resources and providing detailed instructions on redaction and disclosure exercises. Legal issues included a voir dire, bad character, an application to stay and an ex parte application. Also prepared the Respondent’s Notice for an appeal.
R v LR — Led prosecution junior in a complex romance fraud involving three complainants and multiple counts of fraud, controlling behaviour, assault and criminal damage. The case required the preparation and presentation of multiple jury bundles, tens of thousands of WhatsApp messages and thousands of pages of banking records and transactions. The defendant was convicted of all counts except criminal damage, on which the jury was unable to reach a verdict.
R v SOC — Took over a prosecution involving fraud against two vulnerable family members at a late stage. Prepared the case for trial, following which the lead defendant pleaded guilty to fraud totalling approximately £61,000, including offending committed while she was seeking to become the LPA responsible for one complainant’s financial affairs. Following assessment of the evidence, the decision was taken to discontinue proceedings against the less-implicated co-defendant. POCA proceedings remain ongoing.
Ruth also enjoys regulatory work, acting as a case presenter and disclosure counsel for various inquiries and regulators.

Beyond her legal practice, Ruth has a wide range of interests and remains committed to personal development and lifelong learning. She enjoys a variety of sporting and dance activities and is a Grade 7 pianist. She also teaches as a Master Guide within the Pathfinders Association and, in her spare time, enjoys gardening, DIY and hairdressing.
Ruth has a strong interest in education and professional development and continues to undertake further qualifications and specialist courses to broaden her knowledge and enhance her practice.
In 2017, Ruth founded Cake & Counsel, a peer-networking society providing aspiring lawyers with a supportive platform for informal networking, guidance and practical advice. The initiative is complemented by an accompanying blog and reflects Ruth’s commitment to encouraging and supporting the next generation of legal professionals.
Ruth is also the Co-Head of the Education Team at Urban Lawyers, as well as holding active positions in other charities, societies and professional organisations as listed below.
Ruth is a trained Advocacy Trainer for the Sikhs in Law Association.
Ruth’s wider legal experience extends beyond criminal advocacy. She began her career as a solicitor’s agent in civil matters before working as a paralegal at the Serious Fraud Office, where she gained valuable experience in complex and high-value fraud work and is now a member of its Panel of Counsel. She also worked as a barrister’s assistant, developing an understanding of planning and environmental law.
As part of her 4-year sandwich degree, Ruth spent a year’s paid placement within Aston University’s Intellectual Property department, where she was involved in identifying and protecting a range of patents including a dispute regarding the formula of a well-known cancer treatment drug.
Outside Interests:Ruth has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to voluntary work. She has represented and advised individuals in Employment Tribunal proceedings and supported victims and witnesses through the Witness Service. She continues to contribute extensively to the community through several organisations, including Cake & Counsel, which she founded in 2017.
