Jeremy Wainwright KC instructed by Harmail Gill of Singh Solicitors has represented Vickrum Digwa in his murder trial at Southampton Crown Court. The case has concluded. Vickrum Digwa was accused of murdering Henry Nowak using his Kirpan (Sikh dagger). It has attracted international attention from across the political spectrum. Elon Musk and the Prime Minister , Sir Keir Starmer, have both commented publicly as well as numerous social and political commentators, including the Sikh Federation of the UK.
At the sentencing hearing on 1st June, the Prosecution argued for a 25-year starting point for the minimum tariff on the basis that the defendant had the knife with him to use as a weapon. This could have resulted in a minimum of over 30 years once other aggravating features had been taken into consideration. Jeremy Wainwright KC was successful in persuading the Judge that the starting point should be 15 years as Vickrum had a genuine belief that the additional Kirpan he carried was part of his religious beliefs. This resulted in a tariff of 21 years.
