Katie Porter-Windley, instructed by John Fuller & Partners, represented a client at St Albans Crown Court for a two-day trial, where the jury returned unanimous not guilty verdicts on all three counts.
The trial relied on allegations that the defendant had detained the complainant overnight in his home against her will, strangled her repeatedly, and forcefully rubbed cocaine on her gums without her consent. Katie made a successful submission opposing a bad character application relied upon by the Crown through attack on character, outlining that the defendant had to raise that the complainant willingly took cocaine in his interview in response to the allegations, which did not constitute an attack, and further successfully presented to the jury that the defendant was acting in self-defence.
